If you read our last blog post “What is Meditation: Seven Types of Meditation,” you will have heard the word “mindfulness” mentioned a few times as meditation is a means to experience this state of mind. However, why is this important, and how can it change your life?
Learn more about mindfulness in today’s blog, and attend one of Hairdolini’s meditation classes on Wednesdays. Mindfulness 101
Mindfulness is something that is easy to talk about, while not really knowing what it is. However, it is something that everyone can benefit from and everyone can attain.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindful.org says that, “mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” When we are fully present, we can often find greater satisfaction in our lives and can often discover a new perspective of our present situation. Here are a few more things that you should know about being mindful.
Mindfulness isn’t only for certain types of people.
If mindfulness is a new idea to you or you’ve only encountered certain types of people talking about “being more mindful,” you may think mindfulness is only for those who go to yoga, who are vegan, or shop at Whole Foods. However, mindfulness is something that you may know by another name or phrase: “being present,” contentment, and gratitude. It is a state of mind that anyone can experience and benefit from.
Mindfulness doesn’t require you or your life to change.
To experience mindfulness you don’t have to start wearing different clothes or, really, change anything at all. All you need to do is to practice mindfulness by meditating or even just taking a few deep breaths and bringing yourself back to the present moment. Though you don’t need to change to practice mindfulness, it is quite likely that mindfulness will change you:
- You may experience more peace of mind
- You may have a greater ability to be less reactive
- You may enjoy more contentment and satisfaction
- You may benefit from less stress
All of these things can help you have a better life by changing your perspective — which can begin to change you and your life. There are no negative consequences to mindfulness.
Mindfulness is more than a practice.
Though to experience mindfulness, you have to practice it by thoughtfully deciding to take a deep breath and change your perspective. However, mindfulness isn’t just something that you experience in a moment. As you practice it, it eventually becomes a way of living. As you live with more awareness of the present, it becomes easier to go through life with less stress and frustration, and enjoy a positive outlook.
Mindfulness can spark innovation.
When our brains are less “cluttered” with stress, negativity, the old stories we tell ourselves, and other negative thoughts, it is easier for our minds to innovate. When you practice mindfulness, often you will experience effective problem-solving and inspiration for all areas of your life. If you are facing frustrations in life or a difficult problem at work, developing a mindfulness practice might allow you to solve the complexities you face in your life.
Mindfulness could change the world.
Mindfulness could potentially change the world. Imagine if we all practiced more mindfulness. There would be less road rage, demeaning behavior, and shootings, and more solutions to the problems the world faces. There would be less pain and more love and happiness. The possibilities for humankind would be endless if we would all practice more mindfulness. Changing the world begins with changing yourself — let the change begin.
